Love is in the air, but it's not as romantic as it sounds.

For those of you new to the SW coast of Florida, this may be your first experience with love bugs season. Although technically a Central American fly, these small, black & red winged bugs are commonly called love bugs because they are generally seen flying around connected end to end in a mating ritual.

Love bugs don't bite or sting. They are, however, acidic and when they splat on the front of your automobile can potentially cause etching of the paint and/or chrome if left on your vehicle for more than a few hours. I read recently that advances in technology of paints has reduced this threat. That being said, I am not taking chances and we are therefore making frequent trips to the car wash this week. While at the car wash, be sure to wash the love bugs out of your radiator as they can potentially clog your radiator and cause your car to overheat.

According to the experts, love bugs are most active during daylight hours and when temps are 84 or above. They are attracted to light colored surfaces, fresh paint, car exhaust.

Some locals spread a very thin coat of non-stick baby oil over the bumper, grill and hood. They say this makes it easier to clean off the love bugs. I personally haven't tried this. My hubby prefers to put a good coat of wax on the front of our vehicles instead.

Fortunately, the love bugs should be gone in another week or so, until the 2nd swarming season of the year, which is usually late August or early September.

They were so bad at the Sandbar in Englewood a few days ago we had to eat inside. Swarms of them.

I literally found “a couple” in my refrigerator and it’s not like they’ve been exceptionally bad outside my condo. I guess it’s not that surprising that they either rode in on me, the dog, or some groceries but it was still a bit of a shock to find them in there.

Well, I can tell you to spray WD 40 on the front of your car to keep their acid from eating the paint. It works!!!

We drove back from Sarasota last weekend after boating and they were EVERYWHERE! Inside the car, my luggage, plastered onto the grill of the car, ugh.

Tried to save as many as I could but some were just sacrificed.

Carry some water and some fabric softener dryer sheets to remove them without scratches. Don't buy plastic scrubbers or sponges, the dryer sheets are just rough enough to destroy bug flesh which is all you want.

They don't stick around for long. Wait six months and they'll be back.
