Differences as stated, with a few exceptions: people are often held in jail prior to their trials so they may not have been sentenced to "anything" yet. They just haven't made bond or have no bond set.

Prison is for convicted criminals. Not just murder, rape, etc. I worked at CCCI in Punta Gorda as well and there are people there who passed bad checks, burglarized, sold stolen property, as well as violent criminals. There are several cellblocks and there is a special cellblock for administrative segregation or "ad seg". These are seriously mentally ill offenders, those who have shown violence toward other inmates or staff, etc. They are locked up for 23 hours a day. The other inmates usually have jobs (in the prison or on day jobs like roadside cleanup) or are in school. They are often in the yard, walking from building to building, working out, etc.

The prisons contract with companies to provide officers and health care workers, etc. It depends on who gets the contract as to how good the benefits are. In the county jails, you get county benefits which are usually pretty good, I know the health insurance is fantastic. The downside of jails is people are in and out all the time, it's less controlled, you never know who's coming through the door. In a prison, you know exactly who is gonna be there when you get there and when you leave.

And Walleye, I lived in Punta Gorda Isles from 2001 to 2006. Not gated but might as well be. There are a few gated communities in Port Charlotte/ Punta Gorda but they are really not worth it. Punta Gorda Isles (PGI) is as safe a neighborhood as you could ever live in. Except, of course, if a hurricane named Charley comes through. (Sorry, still have some PTSD).

Also, Florida Gulf Coast University is a great school. It's young, only established for ten years, but is a fully credentialed state university. Great liberal arts, art program, business, nursing, and opening a new college of engineering. It is truly a "green" school - built in Estero - South Ft. Myers area and much of it is in everglades type lowland swamp land but they did a GREAT job of preserving the land. So naturally it is a good school to study biology, environmental studies, etc. It's not a far commute from Punta Gorda - about 45 minutes down I-75.

Florida Gulf Coast University - Fort Myers, Florida
