I don't think anybody enjoys the ride into Savannah from Richmond Hill, and having friends that live out there, I would think it would be a real drag to live out there, plus that God-awful drive there and back. I have friends that live out in Rincon and Pooler, they have no complaints, but that is super small and boring to me. I have lived on Isle of Hope and LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it. I live close to there now and still love it. Mayfair is nice and friendly, but Isle of Hope is much better. Dutch Island and the Landings are also great places to live, haha and the Landings is a good 15-20 minutes to get into Savannah and Dutch Island about 15!

You being a New Yorker won't have any kind of effect on your job search. There are plenty of northerners employed here in Savannah

I'm not too worried about th ehalf hour drive into Sav. I will most likely be working off hours and won't battle too much with traffic. While we are talking about drive times, how is traffic throughout the city? I have heard a lot about how bad it is in ATL, but not much about Savannah. Also, with regard to crime, are there neighborhoods that I should be avoiding? Like I said, I am from NY and don't scare easily, but that doesn't mean that I want a gun to my head when I pull up to a stop light. Lots of people have talked about the crime/gang activity, but I haven't seen anything about specific places where this is an issue. Any thoughts?

The more people who move here the worse traffic will get. I've noticed that traffic is substantially worse than it was a decade ago. Certain streets get clogged up during peak commute hours but it is nothing like Atlanta. Like you said, avoiding major thoroughfares at peak hours will help.

You can drive anywhere without fear of being held up by a person with a gun except a few places you'll never find on your own. So don't worry about that - though carjackings often occur in unlikely middle class, suburban gas stations

As far as your questions about outlying communities, I personally feel much of the white flight to these places is exactly that. White folks (and middle to upper class people of other backgrounds) who don't want their kids to get picked on or to go to crummy schools...blah, blah, blah. So as fascinating as I'm finding the reverse discrimination issues at City Hall; subtle racial/socioeconomic issues are always at play when you hear someone recommending Richmond Hill, Pooler, and Rincon over well-established, equally safe neighborhoods within the city limits of Savannah. {IMO, of course}

I suppose it is nothing new that lines are racially divided in major cities. And I have no doubt that that there is a thinly veiled bigotry throughout, from politicians to soccer moms.
My only concern when choosing a neighborhood is that my future children will be safe when playing outside or with other kids in the area, and that they get the best education possible. I wouldn't want them to grow up without knowing other cultures, or how other people live. Naturally, I would want my children to be accepting of all ethnicities. I think that is hard to find in some of the fringe towns, (both wealthy and poor neighborhoods). People grow up only seeing one thing and it jades them

I work in the historic district of Savannah, with one person from Manhattan and one from Buffalo. There are Yankees galore here.

Ya know? It's kind of off topic, but I am amazed at the things you miss when you move away from an area. After living in AZ for several years, I finally came across a Jewish deli. I saw the bakery section and saw Kokosh and Hammentashen. I was soo excited, and when I saw that they offered a kaiser roll as a choice of bread, I could have cried! I chose to leave NY and don't regret it, but my gosh, I miss good jewish delis.
