Savannah is a walk in the park compared to life in LA. Houses are waaaayyy cheaper and there are no traffic jams here. You'll be just fine.

That is what I think too- thanks for the encouragement! I am really looking forward for the opportunity to buy a house -that is impossibility here. I am really excited! I love old homes and think the beauty in Savannah is unparalleled.
It is funny when I read the threads about "danger" & people needing to carry guns. I lived for a few years in downtown LA, my building was actually 2 blocks from Skid Row & I saw druggies & homeless all day long all the time. I even walked to my car one morning as I was leaving for work and passed a guy shooting heroin on the steps, It was about 7 am.
But where I live is 'up & coming' so the old buildings are being converted into lofts so it’s a rich/poor situation and even then, I never had a problem once. Simple procedure- always be aware.
So some of these people that worry about it are laughable- people need to live in dangerous places to speak about what danger really is.

Unhappy I wish this was Mayberry!

I live in Pooler, which is just outside of Savannah. My house is a little over ten minutes drive from downtown, via I-16, and we are in Savannah daily. This evening, my wife and I decided for a coffee and happened to listen to the six o'clock news about someone shot to death on Abercorn. There was also discussion about two soldiers who were recently murdered. These incidents didn't happen in areas my family is unfamiliar with, but major roads we take every single time we go to town. After listening to the news, we decided we had to have been right in the neighborhood today when that crime took place. Usually we would go to town earlier, but because it took us so long to get our two babies ready and get out of the house, we were right around the crime area when it happened. We even pulled over for a fire truck. Who knows?

Yes, you can get robbed in Mayberry, but you have a much greater chance of not getting robbed in Mayberry vs Savannah or any other metropolis. Anyone interested in a beautiful home in Pooler on the lagoon with a fenced yard? Seriously. We plan on raising our babies where they have a better chance of not catching a stray bullet...statistically speaking that is.

I just wanted to add that I have lived in NYC (five years) and LA (about a year and a half). I read the post above mine and just thought that needed to be said - because though I am from Montana, which is a whole different planet, I do know city life. It isn't that I don't feel safe in Savannah. It's that I, for the most part, do feel safe. But then I hear about all of the crime and how close I was to it. That's what bothers me.

Default Yes, Crime is everywhere and it is a problem

The denial of the problem is the problem. No one speaks out for fear of retaliation. The political figures in this town are complacent and aren't educated enough to know the value of PSA, (public service announcements).

Just the other day in Daffin park where I walk my dog there was a shooting, down the street several months ago, in a nice neighborhood no less, a man was unhappy with his girlfriend so he shot her and pushed her body out of the car and into the street and drove off.

Have you ever seen a person roll down their car window and throw a bag of McDonalds out into the street, well just drive around for a day in Savannah and you are guarenteed to have this experience.

Savannah is a great place to visit simply because of the history, but to live here and think that you will continue life in the 21st century is a false belief. Savannah is decades behind the modern world.

The thugs is South Central Las Angeles know enough to put trash in a trash can, people in Savannah are just to stupid to have this awareness.

I watched one city council meeting and that was enough to realize why this city is in trouble. The focus was the travel budget for members of the council. The Mayor was so concerned about the travel budget that he wanted to manage the funds without supervision....That right there is a problem within itself.

This is the ugly truth..

Default Oh come on...

Drive around a day and see someone throw a MacDonald's bag out of their car... you think that doesn't happen in LA? Give me a break.

Interestingly, Savannah and it's surrounding communities, are filled with people from all over the place. It's a melting pot with jobs that bring people in from all over the world. I don't think people in Savannah are "stupid" as was stated above. On the contrary. Southern leaders are known to scratch each other's backs a little and excercise their long lived good ole boy system. The LA PD isn't exactly known for polished integrity, however, are they? It doens't matter where you're talking about, people in powerful positions are often tempted towards corruption.

Garbage? Even people in pristine places like Glacier National Park throw garbage out the windows of their cars, unfortunately. People are pigs. While Savannah is filthy, I've at least seen an effort to pick up roadside garbage, and the people who collect our garbage are punctual, care about their jobs, and are nice. LA is no cleaner, sorry.

Crime is Savannah is something I know very little about. I used to live in Savannah around 1994-1996. I lived in the Georgetown part of Savannah, south of 204. Perhaps I was sheltered from everything.

My family and I own a home in a newer subdivision off Quacco Road near the I-16 exit (Pooler). We were laid off from a major aerospace company in the area and decided to move back West because of the lay-off, and because we were soul-searching about where we wanted to raise our kids, etc. We loved our home and our neighbors within our culdesac are good people. While our home and property have never been broken into, my wife and I have heard of many homes and vehicles in the neighborhood which had been...and in broad daylight. There is a lot of building going on in our subdivision (we don't live there anymore, but couldn't sell, so we are renting it). Before we moved away, November 2, 2009, I witnessed theft and vandalism taking place across the lagoon from our home where the new construction is taking place (being laid off I'd had a lot of time to observe and be paranoid). The neighborhood adjacent to the new construction is older and only a small patch of trees away. I've witnessed kids coming from the neighborhood to use the community pool (no biggy except for the spray paint that followed), carve obscenities in the freshly finished concrete driveways, and steal construction equipment from the work sites.

Our former realtor told me that in another subdivision close by, a truck pulled up to a new construction site and loaded up all the appliances in the middle of the day.

My family and I were in the middle of a sting operation while eating at Wendy's (Hwy 80). She was pregnant and sitting beside my three year old, with her back to the door. Behind her, several men in civilian clothes entered the establishment with guns, none of them saying a word. Outside a man was face down on the ground getting arrested with a large group of undercover guys over him. Next, a lady was escorted out of the bathroom. The couple that was arrested had been sitting right next to us. The lady had smiled at my son. I stood up right in the middle of it all and led my family out the door. Nobody stopped us going. It was weird and a major deciding factor for us on whether or not to stick around and wait to be re-hired (benefits and money are good, but at what cost?).

Lastly, I heard of a car-jacking in the dentist parking lot off Hwy 80 near Piggly-Wiggly. The lady I heard about it from witnessed it from the dentist chair.

According to an Sheriff's Deputy I worked with, there is a lot of meth in Effingham County. The communities along the outskirts of Savannah are nice looking, but the crime is there.

I always thought the idea of a gated community was ridiculous until I moved to the Savannah area. Now, I wouldn't move back into our Pooler house unless they put a gate up at the entrance to the community...oh, yes...and hell would have to freeze over first, also.

I guess the Savannah area is one big paradox. I never new there was much crime in Savannah. One of my old classmates from elementary school told me Savannah was going down the drain. I shrugged it off because I found it hard to believe. Then again, the last time I was ever there was the day I moved away, in February 1996, to a metro with more violence(and at that time, Atlanta was one of the nation's murder capitals).

Default Thats the truth.

When the lights go out, the streets turn into operation ghetto drive by. Savannah is horribly poverty ridden, and unemployment is at an all time high. Even local rapper, Jason "Camoflauge" Johnson was gunned down in front of the studio he recorded with, holding his son, in broad daylight. In one of his raps he described the situation perfectly. "Only in the ghetto can you go to the corner store, purchase a crack pipe, one razor, and two Newports. Go to the crackers neighbor hood for that shi*, and they're looking at you crazy like, N*gg* this ain't the projects." The crime here is like an everyday occurrence, if you don't see it... your blind. I guess I can say that Savannah has just corrupted me, but I'm proud to be surviving it. My friends grandparents once said, "It's a pretty place, but everywhere you go your five minutes way from the ghetto." Thats the truth. RIP Camoflauge.
