Having lived on much of the east coast my entire life, I would see the following:
1. Monticello, VA..you absolutely must go see Jefferson's home, it is a sight to behold and will take all day if you do everything including touring the incredible gardens. It is outside of Richmond VA, so from Williamsburg you would travel about 2 hours east on I-64. Just watch the I-64/95 merge its tricky.
2. Speaking of gardens..if that is your sort of thing, south of Philadelphia, PA. is a place called Longwood Gardens which is a great place to visit.
3. You could probably do Valley Forge and Washington's Crossing in one day and there is a cute small town in the area called New Hope, kind of trendy place to shop for the day, neat stores, etc.
4. Sorry you have realitives in Conn. I lived there for a bit. I am not sure if they are open in Sept. but you could head up I-91 to the Mass Pike and go visit Tanglewood for good concerts and then visit the Berkshires or Stockbridge which is a huge tourist area.
5. Also while you are up there you can stop at either the Mohegan Sun, or Foxwoods, they actually have go entertainment of the non casino type.
6. I do not know if you are a tennis fan, but the end of the US OPen will be in NYC around that time.
7. On your way up I-95 from DC into Baltimore, if you take I-895 you could stop at the Ft. McHenry National Park. See where the star spangled banner was written.
8. Of course spend the day in Philly and see the liberty bell, pa state house, the new constitution center, etc.
9. If you do find yourself on the NJ Turnpike heading north, the best diner in the world is in New Jersey at a place called Mastori's. Get off the Turnpike at exit 7A take I-195 East to US-130 South. Then go about 7-8 miles south on US-130 and it will be on your right. Huge parking lot, always fill, large portions! Take home a cheese or cinnamin loaf for me.
10. If you have kids, two amusement parks are Kings Domain on I-95 about 30 miles north of RIchmond, and Six Flags about 15 miles East of Exit 7a on the NJ Turnpike.
11. On your way to the Cape, you may want to stop at the huge mall built in providence at the I-95/I-195 interchange. That entire city was transformed, they have something called river fire, which is amazing to watch at night..go look it up on a website.
12. You must on your way up the corridor, stop at any Wa-Wa's for a hoagie (NOT a SUB). Plus they have the cheapest gas.
I know I am forgetting a ton of other things, but this is a good start. Everything mention should be on the web. Have fun, take your time, and good luck!
