I will be in Savannah Fri and Sat nights and would like to check out the sights on Sat and do a little shopping. I was going to reserve a room in the HD, but would prefer to save my money (for shopping) and use Priceline for a better deal. Of course, if I do that, who knows where I might end up. Is parking abundant in that district? Are there parking garages?

TIA!

At this time of the year, Savannah's low season, there are good deals on hotels in the Historic District. You could stay at a hotel downtown for as low as $80 a night, probably lower. Do some searching, and try your best to stay away from sites such as Priceline or Cheap Hotels. Actually, search for hotels on those sites, but go to the individual hotel sites from there and then compare prices. (Trust me, I'm in the hospitality sector and I know how the system works) Might I suggest hotels such as the Planters Inn (I hear they have some cheap deals going on), or if you want a really good Savannah experience, the Marshall House is a GREAT place to stay and their customer service can't be beat. For a more modern experience, the Avia is also a good choice and the location can't be beat.

As for parking, yes, finding parking downtown can be a MAJOR hassle. The best thing to do is to find a parking garage and walk around. The most expensive, but most modern and probably best located, is the Whitaker Street Garage located near City Market. Another good one is the State Street Garage, about a block from Broughton Street where you'll find good shopping.
If you are staying at a hotel downtown, just do valet parking. It'll be a lot easier that way instead of searching forever for a spot, especially if you intend on going in and out with your car. (Another tip: If you are staying downtown, you more than likely won't need to use your car UNLESS you travel outside downtown to places such as Tybee Island or the malls on the south side of town)

Thanks. My background is actually tourism and I was a reservations concierge at a CVB for many years, so I know about comparing rates. I have been very fortunate though when I have used Priceline in the past. When I find something that looks good to me, I will call the hotel directly to see what they can offer price wise, one of the nights is Christmas after all, and we know how dead that is for hotels!

Excuse me??????????????????

You obviously didn't read my initial question, which was about parking, not hotels. Now be a good boy and go back and read the thread title.
