I read somewhere (though I can't find it now) that this won't be a system used to cross the country, but rather only certain geographical areas. Mountain ranges was one reason listed why. Also Elon has said that supersonic flight would still be quicker for longer distances such as coast to coast, vs shorter distances where his system would be quicker. But this assumes we actually get viable supersonic passenger flight service again. I'm not holding my breath.
But for certain areas this would be fantastic. Hopefully someone picks it up and pursues making the system a reality.
Quoting myself since I brought it up, but apparently Elon wants to tackle this one as well:
I think he spent "the entire night before the interview going over his ideas" and figured it all out.
That's why he's bailing and letting others take over. He's a very smart man. If this was a viable idea he wouldn't drop it. Apparently he's moved on to supersonic jets. Possibly a more viable option?

Tek_Freek, what exactly is so non-viable about the idea? Right of way? Costs?
Besides, if Musk doesn't consider it viable, then why would he propose and publicize the idea ahead of time?
The overall costs are way off and being pointed out by numerous mathematicians and engineers...its feasible but I can't help feel that we are being taken advantage of. People in this country aren't that smart when comes to research and knowledge about different projects...
what about a supersonic space plane The Sabre Hybrid engine funded by a private firm backed by the ESA as a Mach 5.2 space plane for sub-orbital flights which could take off like a normal plane and glide around the globe and once it gets back into the atmosphere the engines are able to re-start even with the massive heat of Re-entry.
Also it is the smaller project to get manned commercial space flights become normal as a flight on a plane today since it would save fuel and thus cutting down weight and it is more like virgin Galactic in ambitions Rather then Space-X.
sure id'e love to be in that thing during an earthqauke. i think they should point it towrds outter space and put the freaking politicians on it and have another route for all the illigals
