My boyfriend and I are looking to move up there this coming summer (July-ish). We are fairly young but old enough to be on our own. He has been visiting since he can remember and he has some family up there near the Seattle area. I have been up there twice with him once in the summer and once in the winter, so we have a fair judgement on the seasons/weather. He plans on going to college and working and I will be working full time but I have a few concers/questions:
- Best place for college students to live
- Average rent for apartments/small rental home
- Best/Cheapest way to move across the country
- Good Insurance compaines

Help with any of these questions would be very helpful. Also opinions about Washington are welcome, just trying to get a firm idea on the place i'll soon be living. Thank you

My son, born and raised in the area is moving back after he leaves the Navy - He is an advocate of Kirkland. Well established, solid schools, great neighborhoods, Bellevue College nearby. If you are planning on UW - there are many extension programs, Bothell, Tacoma and others so that will factor into your decision. Rents are higher on the Eastside (Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond) and in Seattle.

It would be helpful to know where he'd be going to college, there are several of them here.

When my daughter went to the U of W in Seattle she always rented a house with a few roommates. You can get a studio apt in seattle near downtown for $700, but anything bigger is going to be $1,000 or more. With the traffic here you'd want to work and live close to the school. From people I know, you can rent a 4 BR house in Edmonds, for $1,400/month in a very nice area. In nice areas of Seattle like Greenlake it's about the same for a 2 bedroom.

Probably a one-way U-Haul truck is the best way to move, you can also get a dolly to tow a car behind it if you have one.

We have the same insurance companies here as everywhere else. Ask your current provider to recommend an agent here.
