I suspect more hand-holding might be in order just because we are new. It is also a question of time and practicality - we will be given a rental car, but with driving on the right, two kids in the back, etc.
I always did agent interviews when looking for one to SELL our house. A lot of it is if you can work with the person in a stressful situation. I guess in a buying situation, I don't want someone who will sulk if a transaction didn't go through because I was not willing to waive a building inspection!
As in "big bucks", how much would a buying agent be expecting to make from a transaction - ball park figure, for a house in the 600,000 to 800,000 range?

The agent's brokerage gets 2.5 to 3% of the selling price, and then the agent gets anywhere between 50 to 90%+, of that, depending on the arrangement he or she has with his brokerage. Most of the major brokerages give the agents half, and after they sell several million dollars worth of houses per year, it goes up to 90-100%, so that puts pressure on agents to make a lot of sales.
So, an agent in a 700,000 dollar home deal for a buyer would get anywhere from about 9000 to 20,000 dollars.
