I'm an artist major from Detroit with pets (dogs and cat) I'm thinking of relocating to Seattle in a year or two and going to University of Washington for grad school. Will be bringing a family member too. I'm poor!!!! Where can I stay for less than $1000 a month. I'm planning to study computers and web design before I move to Seattle so that i can find work, but chances are i will be focusing just on my studies and not working till i finish school. Where can I live cheaply and fairly safely .

I think your best bet would be Renton. No areas in Seattle or the surrounding areas are necessarily cheap, but some are definitely more affordable than others. Check out this link for listings:

I remember you. Didn't you post last year and before that, many of them, about being in SC, wanted to live as an artist, didn't want to work at a job that would take you from your art and was concerned Seattle was too liberal? You went to Detroit instead? I bet a lot of the info from all those threads are still relevant but you're probably still not going to be able to live off your art. The rents are higher now than they were last year but as a UW student, what about renting a room(s) in a house? Craig's List has those. The cheaper places are not going to be so close to UW such as Everett and South Seattle.

Not in Detroit now, but was there before I came to SC. Yep, I thinking again about Seattle as a possible destination and would ideally like to do something art related as a profession somewhere. The expense of Seattle and the fact that so many are homeless does give me cause for great concern. However, i do have some interest in working to help the homeless in the nonprofit industry. SC is running a bit thin with me me in terms of opportunities. It's not a bad place to live and is fairly affordable, but wages can be low. As I get older I don't want waste my life away working for pennies with nothing to show for it.

I'm looking at building my skills in education ( probably math/science) , design, and technology among other things so that hopefully I will have a few different options if I end up relocating some where. Like I said, I'm investigating the possibility of grad school, maybe a PhD. in art history or another area of study. University of Washington is one school I am looking at and it would allow me to move to the Seattle area, at least for a few years. I figure it might give me an added edge although there are still no guarantees with a PhD these days.

Avoid basements (it rains there a lot). A converted attic might fit the bill; Artist's Loft.

Are you saying you want to rent a place that is less than $1000 a month, or that you intend to live off of $1000 a month?

Because those are two pretty different questions!

Well let's answer both. I'd like to pay less than 1000 to rent a mobile home, house, apartment , or whatever. I'm also wondering if i can live off less than $1000 a month since you raised the question. How do people afford to live in Seattle with such high rents and million dollar homes? Is the pay very high?

Pay is higher than many places, especially in the technical and professional occupations. Our minimum wage is one of the highest at $9.19. It's still hard for one person to pay rent and live on minimum wage here. In the nicer areas of Seattle and
the eastside suburbs the median family income is $85-130,000 and that's not considered rich by any means. One must make that much to qualify for the median priced home which in King County is over $400,000. You will be able to find something to rent for $800/month, but it will be a small, older studio in a less desirable area or even a room in someone's house. I cannot imagine living off of $1,000 without roommates.
