The best hybrid route is to take I-5 down to Grants Pass. From there, cut over to the Coast on Highway 199 to Crescent City. Take 101 South. You can take it all the way to LA, but you may want to cross over back to I-5. If so, just north of Santa Maria is 166. That's a good cut over and keeps you from missing the best parts of the California Coast.

North of SF that also takes you through wine country, which is always gorgeous.
