I have not had to search for a job in a long time. Certainly never long distance. Do companies EVER hire directly from a skype interview, or is that a preliminary, and the final step is an in person interview? I am wondering if it would be cost effective to job search long distance, or just wait until we are actually there? (I would be job hunting in a non-technical arena)

I just did it last year. In my experience, Skype was simply one tool along the way. If they are serious, they will want to meet with you in person. I'm happy to answer additional questions about this topic directly.

My husband was hired after ONE phone interview. We moved from Virginia to Seattle within one week. They needed him to start 10 days after the phone interview. He's a Network Security Engineer. Now that we're here, Amazon keeps contacting him for an interview We never envisioned something like this happening but we are happy it did Good luck!

My wife was hired off a Skype interview, for me it was one step that was followed up with the company flying me onsite for the final interview. I suppose it just depends on the organizations philosophy and how qualified you are.

Look everywhere for a job, I wouldn't limit myself to only places you can drive to for an interview. Also, ask about telecommuting if that applies in your field.

This doesn't apply to me but I have a friend who interviewed over Skype with a company in Dallas for a PM position. They wanted him to fly down to meet the team but they weren't going to pay for the flight. It just depends on the company and their needs.
