California once was the Golden State.

Then liberals took over and it has been all downhill ever since.

Yeaahhhh, riiiiiiiight. That's why its so expensive to live there - because it sucks so much and nobody wants to live there and the liberals brainwashed everyone to move there and make it too expensive because...liberals.

Even liberals are moving from California to Washington.

Washington really should be a conservative state.

Check out the 2004 and 2008 gubernatorial elections - those were extremely close and Dino Rossi could have won either time.

Liberals are destroying Washington just like they destroyed California.

Harrier - former Washingtonian and south King County citiizen.

Liberals didn't ruin California, fascist/progressives did. California was great when it was liberal. Sadly those days are long gone as the fascists have chased most of the middle class liberals away.

It is so expensive to live there because costs are artificially inflated via regulation. Can't build in a lot of places and when you can, it takes a lot more extra time and money than it does in other states.

California has high taxes, the highest poverty, worst public schools, & a shrinking middle class. The gap between the wealthy and poor is growing due to regressive fascist/progressive policies. California is a major mess right now. It is the example of how not to govern a state.

News Flash - People move from one state to another - ALL THE TIME.

In 2012, 45,597 people moved from CA to WA, while 34,569 people moved from WA to CA. So WA had a net gain of 11,028 in the CA-WA exchange of residents.

HOWEVER, adjusting these raw #s based on relative population sizes, you get:

1.2 people per 1,000 moving from CA to WA, versus 5 people per 1,000 moving from WA to CA. Put another, the migration rate shows over 4 times as many people moving to California from Washington than the reverse, on a population adjusted basis.

Yep!

This state used to have low taxes, very little poverty, the best public schools, and a growing middle class.

That was when Republicans were in control of California.

Washingtonians can look at the Democrat takeover of California as a model for what will happen to their state if they don't take action now.

I guess we're lucky we got the state university rather than, say, Wenatchee or Yakima. Then we'd REALLY be up the creek! Even similar and smaller areas than Seattle seem to have done better in the higher education sweepstakes. The Twin Cities, heck even New Orleans, come to mind. There are historical reasons why the Puget Sound is weak in universities, as has been well-stated earlier. The ONLY way a new all-purpose university could have been founded recently would have been if Bill Gates and Paul Allen had joined forces and created one. But of course as it is, they give lavishly to the UW. The UW is and will always be the only game in town.

I would not put it past the Gates Foundation to start a for free online university. The higher education bubble is about to burst. Universities today are too expensive, too bloated with administration, and too bloated with worthless, politicized classes and majors.

Washington does sort of suffer from a lack of a mid-ranking state school. It's a long way to fall from UW to WSU.
