Got that, OP? Hide who you are and where you're from, because the tolerance and diversity people here love to crow about is actually selective and conditional.

No wonder you're homesick. I'm sure you're more accustomed to people being, you know, friendly and stuff. Good luck to you, sir.

Hey now, I'm from the South. I for one have never experienced the Seattle "freeze" or scorn for being from TX (and LA!), so I don't think City-Data is representative of Seattle as a whole. You get what you give.

I wonder if what the OP is missing is that sort of relaxed, front porch, languid atmosphere of some of the deep Southern towns. I don't know of any similar place around the PNW since what this region lacks is the kind of pressing heat that slows you down and makes lolling on a porch and chatting with walkers by so inviting. Or did, anyway, before air conditioning.

I know and work with several people that are from the South and are not afraid to say so. They all love it here and go back to visit family once a year or so but they are not any different than the people from here or from east coast or to other west coast cities. Stereotyping and trash-talking simply shows ignorance. You see a movie or TV show set in a geographic area and suddenly everyone there must be like those characters? Every state has people people that could fit the mold that some are attributing to the south.

I guess I should rephrase that statement to say from the Southeast.

Ehh some people love it some don't. It is what you make of it. I personally experienced a lot of negativity towards me just because I was from the South. You are right about it being ignorance and not everybody was like that. A lot more where than not however. Every state has backwards trashy people, it's just assumed you are one of them if you are from the southeast.

Same here. From TX. Never got the Seattle "freeze" either.
Never got homesick for TX, but then, we moved here to get away from the thoughts and viewpoints of the south. I did get homesick at first for my much larger home and for my friends until I made new ones up here.

*shrug*

There's a huge difference between asking for a place to become what you want, and asking people to accept you for who you are.

The OP is asking for this state to be more like what he wants. That is not well-received. Imagine if someone came to your house and asked if you could make a meal like he makes at home. You'd consider that rude, wouldn't you? It's not that you don't like his taste. You'd just think, "Well, gee, if you like it so much at home, maybe you should have dinner there."

I can love a Texan as a friend for who she is, while objecting to her wanting to make any part of my state like Texas in any way.

He's asking if there are any areas that already feel like his home. Reasonable question for someone who is homesick. Where exactly did he ask for a place he could turn into the south?

Yeah, there is no "Seattle Freeze". It's an excuse for people who lack social skills or are too timid to make friendships. Usually these sorts of folks have trouble socially no matter what area they live in.

I wasn't attacking the OP, but criticizing the people complaining that people were intolerant towards complaints that Seattle is nothing like the Deep South.

And while I appreciate the sentiment, he's homesick, nothing in this area is going to really be like the south because it's just not the same climate, you know? It's not the same population. It's not the same thing at all. I am not going to go to Mobile, Alabama and ask someone where I can get a really good coffee, just like in Seattle, or find evergreen trees.
