I have an opportunity to work for the FAA in Seattle. I have young children and looking for a nice area in the 500k. Any suggestions?

It's going to depend on what you expect to get at that price. You can find $500K houses in almost any neighborhood, but in some that's going to get you a fairly extreme fixer upper vs others where you can buy a new home for that price.

If I'm not mistaken, Seattle's FAA offices are located in Renton, on Lind Avenue. So, if you want to buy a home in good condition, with a tolerable commute, and decent schools, I'd suggest either Maple Valley, or the part of Renton within the Kent school district, or the part of Renton within the Issaquah school district, or the part of Renton within the Renton district that has good schools( of which there aren't that many, like Renton's Maplewood Heights, or Kennydale), or the city of Newcastle.
If I'm wrong, and they moved the FAA, then forget everything I've said. Normandy Park's nice too.

Well, the Seattle VAMC is SE of the I-5 and I-90 intersection (in Beacon Hill), and the American Lake VAMC (mostly outpatient stuff) is just north of JBLM in Lakewood (technically, Tacoma).

JBLM of course is enormous (the contiguous base itself is probably larger than Seattle). Madigan Army Hospital is in the northern end of JBLM. They have some outpatient clinics on JBLM too. Areas like Renton, Auburn, Kent, Puyallup, etc. are fairly close to either VAMC. The Naval base and hospital are in Bremerton, which can most easily be accessed by ferry from Seattle or driving north from Tacoma past the Narrows Bridge and Gig Harbour.
