Beloved sandwich shop Paseo abruptly closes doors | All You Can Eat | Seattle Times

A lot of friends are upset about this. Twas a good place

(There were some some conspiracy theories and thoughts floating around... I had to laugh @ one of them, apparently Paseo was owned by Raul Castro. Only in Seattle, eh?)

Very surprising for a restaurant that always had 30 people lined up out front.

My cousin knows the owner -- and she (my cousin) moved to Key West, Florida from Seattle in August, 2013. There is now a Paseo located down there (at least there was in April of this year when I visited). I guess they headed South!

Isn't the owner involved in a big lawsuit for wage-theft and tax fraud?

Yes, a lawsuit was filed in September alleging wage theft, illegal labor practices and discrimination against a protected class. They've also failed some health inspections. The accusations in the lawsuit in addition to it being a cash-only business have led some to believe that the sudden shutter might have been prompted by IRS stepping in, too.

Regardless of the 'why' it closed, that place indeed made an amazing sandwich and will be missed.

Yes, indeed. Those were the kind of sandwiches to dream about. Pretty fantastic. I can't think of a better sandwich in Seattle. Maybe Hitchcock Deli in Georgetown. They are also insanely good.

I've been bummed out about this pretty much all day now!

The sudden shutting down of both locations, along w/the lawsuit going on, screams of sketchiness on the owner's end (because any Paseo fan knows it wasn't lack of business!). But I guess we will find out more in the coming days/weeks.

Assuming the allegations made in the lawsuit are true, I hope for the best possible outcome for the workers involved.

That aside, Paseo's food will be greatly missed....
