Campus arborist Sara Shores reported in a UW blog post that as of March 25, cherry trees in the campus's quad were at 25 percent bloom and were on-track for peak viewing the weekend of March 30.

You can expect to see 29 large cherry trees, each about 86 years old, along with some smaller trees, donning hundreds of light-pink blossoms. The trees, originally planted in the arboretum, were moved in 1962 to "the Quad" during state Route 520 construction.

Good article find! I've been to Kyoto, Japan a couple times during cherry blossom season and the blossoms on the quad bring back strong memories. The word "Hanami" is just fantastic in Japan. Hanami-"flower viewing" is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers; flowers ("hana") are in this case almost always referring to those of the cherry ("sakura") or, less frequently, plum ("ume") trees. From the end of March to early May, cherry trees bloom all over Japan, and around the first of February on the island of Okinawa. The blossom forecast (sakura-zensen) "cherry blossom front" is announced each year by the weather bureau, and is watched carefully by those planning hanami as the blossoms only last a week or two.
