How do insects/bugs (e.g., flies, fruit flies, spiders, ants) in the Seattle area compare in terms of quantity and type to in cities like New York City? What about on Bainbridge Island such as a house in a wooded area? Is there a noticeable difference (better/worse)? I've read that fruit flies and spiders are especially bad in the summertime in Seattle but am not sure how that compares to cities in the northeast.

I never even noticed bugs when I lived in Seattle. This is the kind of question we get from people moving to WA from the South or Midwest.

Bugs? What bugs? You get mosquitos when camping out in the woods or in the islands. Other than that, I never encountered any bugs.

Hi maineman, I used to go to a little village way up the Maine coast as a kid called Jonesport, near Machias. I grew up and the East coast, moved to Seattle 32 years ago. We have our ants and spiders around here but very few of the nasty biting bugs (mosquitoes, no see ems) I remember from my youth..

Seattle’s climate is not conducive to a lot of bugs. Yes harmless bumblebees are around in the Spring and Summer but that is about it. Flies around garbage but really not an issue. Not a bug, but slugs are common during the wet season. Watch your step!

How bad are the spiders? I've read about spider season there (tons of spiders of different types getting into the house and webs outdoors) -- is that not a thing compared to other places?

It’s a night and day difference. Yes you will get flies and such and some spiders which I mostly just leave alone. And I’m talking like mini spiders. I’ve never personally seen a spider bigger than a nickel. Other than that they’re pretty much nonexistent in my daily life.

Yellowjackets can be annoying around back yard barbecues, and we do have a "spider season" but they're all harmless. (I've seen a black widow or two but very rare.) Mosquitoes around standing water like anywhere else, but nothing too annoying. Compared to other parts of the country, very low incidence of bugs.

Seattle is one of the least buggie cities. Of course there are some bugs because it's planet Earth, but I don't think you do much better on a low bug place.

Mostly "House Spiders" who live in your house year-round, but you only see them (males) when they are out looking for mates during mating season. More likely in old houses than new houses. They can get pretty big and scare the bejesus out of the "phobic", but are basically harmless and "good guys" who eat a lot of other bugs in your house. If you're doing them a "good turn" by capturing and putting them outdoors, you're likely killing them, since your home is as much their "home" as yours.
