Hi there! We are considering a relocation to Seattle and would like to begin researching high schools in the area. We will have three kids in high school. Can anyone give me insight on areas to look at, avoid, etc? Hubby would be working in downtown area/South Lake Union area and we'd like to keep the commute to 45 min to an hour. Thanks in advance for your help!

First question, as always, is housing budget? Better schools are in areas with high home prices. Also, many send kids to private schools.

I would assume we would initially rent and we would like to keep monthly rent under 4K per month. Problem is - finding rentals accepting animals. Eventually we'd like to purchase for 650K or under.
Thanks!

Also, would like 2500-3000 sq ft if possible. We'll be downsizing by half.

There are places in Seattle proper that would work and help keep commute times/costs down. For example, here's one in the Ravenna/Wedgwood area - 6515 29th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115 | Zillow - where the kids would go to Roosevelt High School, one of the best schools in the region.

Or here's another one not too far away from the first. - 9111 35th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115 | Zillow

But if you really want a suburb, look at Bellevue, focusing on places that would allow commuting on I-90 rather than the SR 520 toll bridge, or northern suburbs like Shoreline, Bothell or Edmonds where you don't have to cross any bodies of water. Schools in all those areas are excellent.

What are you looking for in a location? Near the water or coastline? Recreation nearby? Schools in the Seattle area are generally decent across the board. the best schools overall are in the Eastside (Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond) but the schools in the southside really depend on the specific area you live in especially in Renton, Federal Way, Kent, and Auburn.

Agreed with that, International, Bellevue, and Newport are some of the top HS in WA. Best friend's kids went to Bellevue, they're great prep for Unis in my observation. International looks pretty intense, for kids who want to be winners / college-bound for-sure. US News ranks them all "Gold" for whatever that is worth.

My alma, back in MI, seems to have slipped past thirty years down to "Silver". Pity, back in the day it was definitely a college-prep sort of curriculum. Guessing 75% or more of us were college-bound back then, remainder on track for vocational school. Opportunity was there for those who seized it. If my old man had had the money, I'd have been better off going to the local prep school: also the point of other replies mentioning "private" schools for those who can afford it here in WA.

People commute from Bellevue to SLU mostly via mass transit since driving would be a real time-sink and expensive. I wouldn't bet the store on finding great housing in Bellevue for $650K these days unless paying cash.
