I'm probably going to get my head bitten off for this but I can't help but notice that Japanese people are allowed to have a country called Japan and Mexicans are allowed to keep their country called Mexico. Both countries have strict borders and strict immigration laws. But God forbid Europeans have one strip of land to call their own.
Just finished reading through this thread. I found it very reassuring, in that I am 61, wondering how much longer I will have to work before I can retire, if I can work that long at all! I can't speak for my wife, but, after reading this thread, I feel heartened that I could go the route of living out of a stealth Van, if I couldn't afford an RV. Ideally I can keep my house, but we had thought we could always sell and downsize, thereby having a house to live in for our retirement. Fast forward to after the housing bust and we are upside down, hoping it will turn around in 5 years. Maybe my next vehicle purchase should be a van!

There are times when a good used RV can be bought for a song, Cruzincat. Especially during a quick economic downturn like the one that put you underwater, people were selling them to make mortgage payments etc.
An RV is really much better than a van for two people .... as we get older we like to have a little more elbow room, and a couch with TV, and a bathroom close by rather than having to use the one in McDonalds or a gas station ..... which may be occupied when you most need them.

Many RV's sit in driveways undriven needing tires, belts hoses, and general
service intervals to be put up back on the road. The market is that great esp among people who would have the money to drive them over long distances. They could be great for someone to park it on a friend or relatives property.
I saw a rather nice late 70's to early 80's Dodge 3/4 motorhome van conversion parked in monthly downtown parking with a bicycle chained via seriously heavy chain. My guess someone lives in it discretely for $100 to $200 per month.
Drive though many areas and see hidden situations such as vans or garages with an AC unit that someome may be staying in.
I suspect there alot of affuent survivalists who might also need some one to guard there property via someone staying staying there.

Agreed! DW and I are actively looking for a used tow-behind camper or even a 5th wheel, as we have the trucks to tow. 30' minimum, more if we can find it. We'd tow it up to our land when we buy, and live in it while building. We'd prefer this to a motor home, which you have to drive the whole thing wherever you go. A tow-behind can be unhooked, and you're free to go in just the truck, which uses far less gas.
Yes, I miss Mac also! I don't understand what happened that he cannot use his computer. I realize that he lost the place where he was staying, but any McDonald's has wi-fi. If anyone hears from him, please post the news (unless he says not to).

Ron Paul and many others have suggested that the border fence between the US and Mexico is to keep the Americans IN, not to keep the Mexicans OUT. Fact is, fewer Mexicans are coming here. Another fact is, lots of Americans are voting with their feet, and moving elsewhere. Sometimes I wonder if our whole family (all 15 of us) should be leaving the US for good. Any other thoughts on this?

Where would you go?
I've seen a few places not the whole world, but for all it's faults... can't beat the US.

Good point. Doug Casey has started a community in northern Argentina. Other wealthy investors have staked out places in southern Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and even southern Africa. My first impulse would be to flee to Canada. They have less debt, a much smaller military, way lower population, and a nation of LAWS.
Until you really think about it, the US seems to be the best. But is it really? Look at all the police in riot gear surrounding the Occupy types. Not that I care about the Occupiers, but just the sight of such militarized police units makes me uneasy. Then the implosion of MF Global, which proves that we are NOT a nation of laws. Jon Corzine lost billions of his clients' funds, which were co-mingled when they should not have been, and those investors are out their $$$. Corzine ought to be in handcuffs, but never will be. Only penny-ante guys like Madoff pay the price.
It's the whole crooked-politics and bought-off pols, Washington disregard for We The People, the farces called elections we have (Tweedle-Dum or Tweedle-Dumber?), the riot-helmeted jack-booted "police" (I used to love policemen as a kid - but not now). How 'bout some of those new laws? Patriot Act, repeal of Glass-Steagall and Posse Comitatus and the new National Defense Authorization Act (you should google that one), and it's very obvious to me that the USA I grew up in is not the USA I now live in.
So is this country really the "best". I wonder. DW and I are doing some homework on this now. We both have passports, but our daughters and their spouses do not, nor do the 6 grandchildren. Before this is all over with, we may have to find another place to call "home".
We should all think about that!
