I'd bet a pack of Little Debbie Brownies and a gallon jug of water would be more valuable if there was ever a true breakdown...

Well in NH I would jump on the Little Debbie Brownies, but you could probably keep that water.

It's the law of supply and demand - out here everyone has beef, deer, wild turkeys everywhere. The rivers are full of bass and trout, plus catfish (euww) and pike; people fish here year-round, even through the ice. Lots of feeding area and a small number of people means that freezers and canning jars can be filled with a minimum of effort. But Shrimp and lobster are at a premium, and everyone buys coffee because you can't grow it here! Also there are few egg suppliers around here, and the closest honey supplier is 80 miles away... so we do pretty good with eggs and will do ok with honey next year. I have one neighbor who cannot wait for my sand cherries to start producing - these are things you have to plan for and think about.

If you have something to trade, and can be on an equal footing without desperation, trade is good. The problems enter in when you have desperation. Fortunately I wouldn't be desperate for coffee or even water or Little Debbie chocolate - but there might be some who will be. Know your area, know your potential market, know what you can produce or acquire to meet others' needs as well as your own.
