I've started dabbling in silver again (sold what I had many years ago after a divorce) and I was wondering what everyone else liked to collect or buy. Grams? Rounds? Scrap coins? Morgan Dollars? I've bought a small variety but I think Morgan dollars are beautiful coins.
If you are concerned about the raw metal value, don't buy collector's coins. Just buy rounds, bars, etc. I got rid of most of mine when the price began a freefall a few months back. But, now is the time to buy if you want to get into it.
I'd say you just have to decide what you are in it for. If you are interested in numismatic value, go for the "real" coins. If you are more interested in "barter" currency, go for the rounds and bars. In a real collapse, the collector value will not hold any higher than the value of the raw metal. That's what has always steered me away from the antique coins and to the "barter" coins (other than a few "just for the fun of it" and I've always had the hots for the Peace Dollars, so I do have a few of those).
Years ago when silver was cheap ($5 something) I bought a full set (for 10) of vintage sterling silver flatware with serving pieces for about the same cost as the bullion per oz. No one was buying (after the dot com bust) and I think I scored. I'm always for dual purpose items. I can (but don't, except for holidays) eat with these implements, they are beautiful and they represent a store of wealth that can be used in a pinch. I can't afford similar sets of sterling today as the price of silver has put them completely out of reach. What's sad to me anyway is how many of those sets (and especially sterling vases, tea and coffee service pieces) have been sold and melted down for their silver content.
For investment, I take the cheapest premium I can find. (BTW, APMEX as 10oz bars for .89/oz over spot, today only). It's completely pointless to pay any more than you absolutely have to for investment silver.
I'm also a coin collector, although I haven't done much in that area for years. But the coins I have in my collection aren't considered part of my silver collection. If the SHTF, that will obviously change, but I don't buy numismatic items for their silver content - I buy them for their numismatic value, and they might also happen to have some silver content.
