This evening at Costco, an old man asked me in broken English if he could use my Costco card to make his purchase, because allegedly he forgot to bring his. I'm initially against such things, but I pitied the old man and let him use mine. I still don't know how he got through the front entrance, since there is an employee who checks to see that all people entering Costco have a Costco ID. I asked him about this matter, and he replied with broken English something about his grandson did something...I couldn't quite understand. When I got to the cashier, I told her the old man didn't have ID and asked if he could use mine for his purchase. She paused, studied him for a moment, then reluctantly agreed.
Did I do the right thing, or should I have told this old geezer that rules are rules and there's nothing I could do about it.
All they do is hit that button on their register that indicates the membership card is not for the person purchasing the items which only comes into play if they attempot to return something or you do this a lot. If they suspect your pimping your membership card, they will contact you and have a talk. Don;t worry about it if its just this once.

I had no idea there was such a button.
I did the same thing for somebody back in 2008 because he said he was in a hurry and didn't want to stand in a long line to renew his membership. And furthermore, I felt bad for him because he was in his twenties yet buying Rogain and looked like he needed it.
I got a flat tire around the corner from a Costco once, but I'm not a member. I asked the person at the entrance if they would let me buy a new tire, and they said sure, just find someone that will let you use their card.
It took three or four people, but eventually someone did and I bought a new tire.

I have to find someone with a membership buy my monthly Rotisserie Chicken.... I had a business membership for ~20 yrs, but since I retired (pre-age-50) I have little use to spend $50/ yr to buy my monthly Chicken.
If Costco allows it, then no reason to worry about it. If Costco forbids it, then you should probably follow the rules.
