An ice cream store in my area doesn't take cash. The owner said everyone uses debit or credit cards and he's afraid that cash could be "counterfeit", so he doesn't take it. Has anyone else heard of this?
Nope. Haven't heard of it. And I wouldn't like that very much. Small businesses generally seem less fond of payment cards than cash because of transaction fees.
Merchants who don't take cash are fools, especially ice cream stores etal where most of their sales are under $20.00. Most counterfeit bills are of the denomination of $20's, 50's and 100's. Counterfeit detecting pens run about $2.00. Other detecting methods are available. Use them.
I don't see many people using debit or credit cards for tiny purchases. I sure don't. Merchants get charged 3-5% for people using those cards. Not a good management decision. They probably get shoplifted for more than they lose on sales.
Those pens that supposedly detect counterfeit money dont always work. The only true way is to know about the security features of each bill. Most money has that identifier thread built into the bill.
