I saw something on E-Bay and the dealer is located in Canada. When I called, I was told that in order to ship from Canada to the US that I would have to provide my Social Security Number so that UPS could bring it into the States. I have contacted my local representative but have not received a response. Has anyone ever heard of this? The dealer said that he would destroy my number once UPS got involved.
I didn't know that there were e-bay forums as this was my first look. However, I have always found everyone on this board to be very informative. I did get an e-mail from the dealer who said that the US government, since 9/11, requires the ssn for anything valued at over $2K when crossing the border. I am continuing to research, but maybe I should not have posted here.
I'm a power seller on feeBay and rest assured, you do not have to give your SS# to a seller for any reason. Customs will hold a package if any tariffs are to be paid. A seller in CA doesn't collect or even claim taxes for a US buyer anyway, right? Does Uncle Sam have a Canadian branch we don't know about?
If I were you I'd log into eBay and send a message to security with the email and sellers ID because he's phishing for your SS#.
This is legit since 2004. See UPS web page: UPS: U.S. Consignee Identification Requirements (http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/about/news/consignee_requirements.html - broken link)
I deal with this as a Canadian Manufacturer exporting goods to the states. We don't do a thing with the SSN (or EID) other then list it on the Customs documents for the US Customs clearance.
When Shipping into the US, if we do not list a EID (Federal Tax ID#) or a SSN, the good are held up at the Border until they get said info.
It's the American Government wanting to know Where goods being shipped into the country are going, and who they are going too.
I also worked as a Customer Clearance Clerk for Yellow Freight at the Queenston-Leweston Bridge into Buffalo NY. I would ensure all the documentation for the Shipments on the Truck were in order. If they were not, the whole truck would be held at the border. The most common reason a shipment was held up was a Missing Tax ID# from my experience there.
