What do baseball, football, and basketball have in common? They have multiple stops in action throughout the course of a game and match. These allow for commercials and Billions of dollars in revenue per year. Unless soccer is adapted to this format it will never work here.
No, the reasons why soccer won't ever be as popular in the US are twofold:
1) The money. Players in baseball, basketball, and hand-egg (er ... American football) make many multiples of players in the major soccer league in the US. The truly exceptional players in the US are world-class, but they quickly get scooped up by the deep-pocketed football (er, soccer) clubs of Europe. If I was a talented athlete that didn't have a devotion to one game or another, the last game I'd choose is football (er, soccer, not hand-egg).
2) People from the Deep South who value hand-egg over primary education and NASCAR and Gawd and coontry will never want to watch something that is beyond their comprehension.
Haha, so this is being televised purely for charity?
If there was consumer demand for it, advertisers would find their way into it. You have to have the consumer demand first.
Who really cares though? I like watching soccer because of the lack of commercials. If soccer became huge in the USA, it would quickly become unwatchable.

Yeah, soccer is a deeply complex game...
I was with you till you went off the reservation and just got insulting and stupid.

It could have been better handled if the argument was... people in the Deep South don't like soccer simply because it is not an American sport, and most of our best players play in European countries rather than the MLS. American football, baseball, and basketball have a much higher priority - being American sports.
Heck, we didn't even have a pro league until 1995, which also hurt. American soccer is relatively new, compared to the four "major" sports.
^ Honestly I consider soccer to be one of the major four. I'm assuming you're talking about hockey being the fourth sport, which is seriously a Canadian sport, not HUGE in America. Sure, the stanley cup finals may get more viewers than the MLS championship, but definitely not more than a USA World Cup game. Between MLS, world cup, Premier League, and every other top flight league in Europe, soccer has a large following in the states. Of course, it may not seem like it because the announcers on Sportscenter are the most BIASED people in the world and would rather talk about competitive basket-weaving and the world series of darts than soccer.
Give me a break, Sportscenter makes me sick.
