So what are everyone's views on the GB team? Personally I am all for it. I think every nation should be represented on the field of play at kick off and throughout, maybe 4 English, 3 Scottish, 2 Welsh, 2 Northern Irish? Or 5 English, 3 Scottish, 2 Welsh, 1 Northern Irish? The home nations out side England have some quality players not as many as England though obviously. Ithink its an under23 tournament if I am not mistaken? Players like Ramsey, Bale (Wales) Goodwillie, Bannan, Forrest (Scotland) McGivern, Boyce (Northern Ireland) would do well.
I think there can be 3 over 23 players which rules out a lot of the English team.
Kyle Walker, Phil Jones, Smalling, Walcott and Welbeck will be there i think.
Gary Speed doesn't want Welsh players to play for Team GB so it will be interesting to see if Bale and Ramsey do play.
Would be good to see how it all pans out and if the fans/players themselves get behind it if the Scots/Welsh/N Irish give their backing for their players to compete (and on a level playing field, no national quotas for me), but otherwise I'm not a big fan of football being in the Olympics, ditto for other sports like tennis where the Olympics is not the biggest stage the sport has to offer. Besides, it's at the wrong time of year for quality football, especially coming only a month after Euro 2012.
I dont think it provides much experience for youngsters at all, at least not much. its not a tournament any nations take seriously. A youngster would benefit more from playing at home in a friendly for his club IMHO. The only reason there is a UK team is because thats where the tourney is held otherwise it would be a non entry.
Probably because thats all they could win medals at
Im a huge boxing fan dont even watch the Olympics for it because its not real boxing by any stretch of the imagination. The games just arent that important to me. I would watch the athletics which is all it should be IMHO. The only way I might hear a football result from the games is via here reading your posts.
