Find a job first. I'd start your search in the Charlotte Area, Greenville-Spartanburg Area, and the Columbia area. Charleston is nice, but the job market there, particularly in high tech industries, is somewhat lacking compared to the other 3.

There are great aspects to every part of SC, but at the end of the day you need a career as well. Figure out where you can work, then you can narrow it down. Until then, you're just going to get all the regional partisans on this forum worked up in their typical pissing contest.

There is Bayer Corp. down here in the Charleston area. Other companies that aren't biotech but may work for your skill set is BAE, Alcoa, Spawar, and there's google(they have hired nuclear engineers so not all IT stuff). Also now Boeing. The area is more expensive then others for housing in the state but better cost of living in Summerville and Goose Creek which are closer anyway to those companies. Property taxes are low. Schools are not great but there are a few pockets of better schools. Like Stradford HS, Cane Bay- goose creek and Summerville schools are pretty good. All schools in SC will most likely be worse than in your area. Lexington One in Columbia has a very progressive school system and Greenville too(i.e. foreign language immersion starting in kindergarden) but not sure about other areas. Nothing like that in the lowcountry but there are some good but pricey private schools.
