"More cowbell": Benefitfocus kicks off $60M Charleston expansion – The Post and Courier

Along with all the other great things going on, the push for a "mini Silicon Valley" in Charleston continues to grow, as BenefitFocus announced a new $60 million dollar investment in high tech jobs and a big expansion in Charleston, that will bring about 1200 new tech jobs. Along with Boeing buy HUGE lots of land around it's current site- about 3X the amount it now sits on- it appears huge growth in aerospace and tech jobs is coming for the area. You know....for all those who aren't "college dropouts working as a bartender" haha

Good news for Charleston, but this belongs in the appropriate subforum.

Its big news for the state, and jobs that people statewide may be interested in. If only people in Charleston hear about it, it wouldn't help the whole state.

I mean you can say that about practically any economic development project, but it still belongs in the appropriate subforum unless the mods want to create a thread about economic development in SC in general.

And I'm pretty sure people have means to hearing about this development other than this forum.

This sounds like a desperate attempt at waving the news in Columbia's face.

Also, Silicon Harbor is what we are. FastCompany coined it and Riley used it in his speech that day for the groundbreaking.

Not Columbia, but he did take a dig at another poster. It's not that serious IMO.

Those nicknames are a dime a dozen these days and don't really mean much outside of a few select locations IMO. List of places with "Silicon" names - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You're right that they are a dime a dozen, but it's more important than you think to put a stake in the sand. Tech industry is browsing for the next "valley". We're probably 5-10 years from the Valley becoming a thing of the past.

Not sure why you are bringing Columbia into this, Columbia is doing fine. in fact, GDP is higher in Columbia. While it is a good announcement, fact is Charleston is a long way from becoming silicon valley or any derivative of it. If any city in the Carolina's will become a major tech player (if it hasn't already), it's Raleigh. Charleston does not have a major research university to support a large cluster of high tech and is way down the list of Carolina cities in terms of technology. And, as much as it pains folks in Charleston, it is a tourist/beach city. Lots of bartenders. Boeing will be the single largest project in SC but, it has to grow a lot to offset to other sectors of the economy.

I just mentioned Columbia as something I thought the OP was just posting this in the SC forum to get at Columbia folks. I didn't mean anything by it. Pay attention next time.

Also, numerous times people have told you to go back to the NC forum as you're not wanted here. Take the hint.
