Publix in Orangeburg? Interesting. I thought the Publix opening in Red Bank was surprising due to demographics but I have to say that a Publix in Orangeburg is even more surprising. A good many of my friends say Publix is expanding far too quickly but it's almost a necessity due to the amount of competition.

I think Publix is expanding gradually instead of quickly. Successful supermarkets that are performing well and are stable financially are able to and will open quantities of quality stores. Publix, since entering South Carolina in 1993, has expanded to 58 stores statewide in 24 years. That is gradual expansion.

Publix has been working its way into smaller cities and towns statewide in recent years. The supermarket segment is undergoing changes with weaker banners BI-LO, Food Lion, and Piggly Wiggly closing stores and stronger banners Publix and Walmart Neighborhood Market opening stores.

How soon could Publix open a store in Orangeburg? I hear a supermarket is speculated to anchor a 62-acre mixed use development, Magnolia Village, on North Road.
