Are there cicada bugs in SC? When I'm working at the desk and the window is open I can hear some type of loud bug buzz every few minutes, what is that? Don't laugh, everyone know I'm paranoid of bugs and I just got my second fire ant bite, so I'm dealing with it all, just want to know.
I really don't think we have them on the SC coast. While in the mountains of NC a few years ago, we were sitting on a porch in the late evening. The roar was so loud it was almost deafening. I asked what I was hearing and was told that it was cicadia. I remembering thinking that it was so peaceful and quiet when I came home........just some frogs crocking in a pond nearby.
I grew up in the foothills in the Upstate and Cicadas are definitely present there. I remember finding their little exoskeletons and playing with them when I was a kid. Sometime when I was in middle school there was a huge swarm. I remember thinking it was like the plauge of locusts in Egypt. They were drawn to lights at night and ended up dying in piles in front of windows. I remember big piles in front of gas stations that had bright flourescent lights. I don't think they're much of a threat or cause any actual problems, its just kinda gross for people that don't like bugs. I'm not sure the interval, but I believe they are on some kind of cycle. 17 years could be right. I was in middle school from 93-96, so it could be due back 2010-2013.
If you hear it in the evening it could be a locust.
These are mainly plant feeders and many, besides the notorious Locusts, are serious pests of agriculture. Antennae, cerci and female ovipositor, much shorter than those of Crickets. In the majority of species, both sexes (but especially the males) stridulate by rubbing the hind legs against the forewings, and they have an auditory organ at the base of the abdomen.
Yes, I'm in North Carolina and we have them, so I know they are in SC as well. I don't know much about them, but I don't think they will go out their way to harm you. I'm not a bug person either. I can't live without a can of raid in my house.
