So I'm watching Japan vs. Fiji in the Pacific Cup, and it's practically a monsoon out there, the pitch was completely waterlogged within minutes.
And the difference between weight & strength of the two packs is phenomenal. In that sense, I tip my hat to Japan for having any success at all in rugby; it's tough to win if your pack is prone to getting completely manhandled.

Japan has money to throw around, thats what saves them. They attract many decent foriegn players (many from NZ) to play in their domestic league. Some have qualified to play for Japan over the years, but not many.
They have also had a series of top coaches with the national team. The latest being Eddie Jones.
So I was watching the Collegiate (University) 7s championship yesterday, and I saw a few really crazy tries, some chip and chasers off the boot, and one guy hurdled the last man in the middle of the pitch and just kept going. At the very least, I think events like this can drum up interest in the XV's game in second-tier nations, particularly the US.
