Wow, you must be the life of the party! Definitely a glass-half-empty kind of person, if that statement is any indication.

"He figured out a way to gain medals".... yes, by training and by beating the times of how many other world-class swimmers. Gee, I guess we all have that figured out, but only someone like Phelps can actually go out and win the medals.

His wins were all split seconds.... you are familiar with how world-class races work, and how often a split second makes the difference between winning and losing, right?

He is no Ledecky... so glad that is apparent to you. Katie Ledecky is a 19-year-old female swimmer; Michael Phelps is a 31-year-old male swimmer. Any other questions?

A smattering of early Phelps' history:

And here we are, in 2016, talking about the gold and other medals Phelps just won. Amazing. Mediocre? Please.

I'd say I was from Singapore, too.
They get paid 30 times more for a gold medal.

Are you kidding? He holds the world record in Olympic Gold Medals (22). No one else comes close. He also holds 7 world records in time in events, more than any other male.

He is a world record maker, and consistent. A true Olympian, by any measure. There is no one else who comes close.

Ledecky, I believe, has 3 golds and 3 world records. She, too, is an Olympian.

Pretty sure that anyone who participates in the Olympics is an Olympian. Including the back-flopping divers from the Philippines.

Lets all hope you don't think swimming is popular and like track and field, etc...

Let's not forget that Phelps still holds the world record in the event he came in second to Schooling, by a comfortable margin too (set back in 2009).

Considering Phelp's age and his grueling races the prior days, I'd say his second place only cements what a great athlete and competitor he truly is.

This thread is idiotic. Swimming is an individual event and you either win or lose on your talent. He won the gold medal 4 Olympics in a row in the same event which has never been done. He also won 23 Gold Medals and the next person has 9. He is far and away the greatest Olympian of all time. I have enjoyed watching him in every Olympics and IMHO he is the greatest of all time.

What sport did you compete in at an Olympics? What year?

You do realize that "immortality" means the ability to live forever, right? If you are hanging around people talking about Phelps (or anyone) having the ability to live forever, you are hanging around idiots.

And why would the ability to live forever (a trait no one in our history has possessed) tie into someone's athletic skill at a particular sport?
