It's interesting how he's so good because his style of playing is rather flat compared to other players. But then again, the same thing goes for Ash Barty. So, I think what makes them so good is their ability to read their opponent's game very well.
I don’t find his style flat at all. His powerful and accurate ground strokes from the backcourt remind me of Connors and Agassi, only better.

I think he means Novak doesn't put as much spin on the ball as players like Nadal. Not that he can't use spin, but his ground strokes tend to be hit flatter than most of his peers.

More fun to watch Novak”s ground strokes IMO, but to each his own..

Connor's forehand was about as flat as it can get and a defensive weapon. He was a rare lefty that preferred his backhand, and was nastier from that side, IMO. I think you make a good comp though, both outstanding defensive players who didn't beat themselves and could out tough you over the course of a match.
I like spin, personally. It's fun to play that way and there isn't much better tennis, IMO, than watching your opponent give up on a shot that looks like it about to go long only to watch your top spin catch back up with the ball and drop it right into place.
