Aloha!

I have been job hunting for the past year via the internet in St George, Washington, and Hurricane. I have a very diverse background and a broad range of experience, including but not limited to the following positions:

Apartment Manager (20 unit complex for disabled citizens)
Skills Trainer (worked with all levels of disabilities)
Proctor (for Community College in AZ)
State Welfare Worker (gave Food Stamps, Medical, and Cash Assistance to individuals per AZ state welfare system)
Secretary (Dept. of Education-tons of clerical experience, and tech consult for the office)
Head Start Special Ed Teacher (worked with SPED children in an inclusion classroom)

I do not hold a formal degree, I do have a certificate of completion in Customer Service, as well as a diploma for Medical Assisting.

With such an array of experience, I know that I can find employment....but where to start? I would like to know some of the top employers in the Southern Utah Valley. I signed up with Career Builder and have some e-mails sent to me, but the only positions are usually: Sales @ Ross' Clothing Store or an Admin. Assistant for Cinnamon Hills. I know that there has to be more jobs out there, but where are they?!?

Thanks for any input, and of course for any job offers!

Mahalo

I don't know exactly how helpful it will be for your patricular type of work, but the website www.indeed.com has been good for me in searching job openings in other cities for all sorts of job fields.

You can list all jobs, or specify key words, and view the "new" or most recent postings. At the very least, you get an idea of local companys in the area, and maybe then go to their websites for listed job openings and even to apply.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck!

Most jobs are service related with low pay

If you wish to make more than minimum wage - don't tell anyone you have a Certificate In Customer Service.

I'm trying to be gentle here, but there *IS* a valid reason that your resume -- chock-full of details on your "very diverse background and a broad range of experience" -- is only being responded to with menial, entry-level positions...

Job-wise, SW Utah is a pretty blue-collar region. You'd know that if you've actually researched the area, looking for the "top employers in Southern Utah Valley."

The local newspaper's employment section is:
St. George Jobs from thespectrum.com, The Spectrum and CareerBuilder.com

If you are looking for work, St George is definitely not the place to be. I have been here almost 4 yrs & cannot find a job. I am registered with a temp agency & I have worked exactly 1 day this year so far through them. Trust me this is not the place to come looking for work.

AS someone that did a lot of hiring in the past, let me give you a big hint.

Tailor your resume for the job you are applying for. Make it a sales job for that one job, showing the qualifications that fit that particular job only. With a computer and cut and paste, you can quickly change your resume to fit any job.

Filling one up with all the background you say you have, will eliminate you immediately. It says you can't keep a job, and will work against you. A tailor made resume, showing qualifications of the job, will get an HR specialist or owners attention, when one with a scatter gun approach with all you have behind you will shut them off.

Example: About 50 years ago, for my wife's health we had to leave what is now known as the Silicon Valley, and we had to move right now. We moved to where my folks lived for the clean air, and were going to stay with them a few days while we got our bearings on where to move. We had 5 small children.

My dad had the out of town newspapers waiting for me. There was one ad for a job of a type I had 5 years before. I sat down and typed a specialized resume for that job and a cover letter, and mailed it that first day in town. The next day I got a call they wanted to talk to me and made an appointment for the following day. When I got there, the division head had me sent directly to him. He showed me a stack 3 inches thick of applications. He said HR had sent them to him (mine had gotten there the last day of taking apps) with mine on top as it got their attention. He told me that he saw my app and never looked at any other of the apps. He not only offered me the job, but offered me department head position. I went to work for a job in today's dollars was about $125,000 per year, not needing a degree to get it.

I later got to look through the stack of apps out of curiosity. I found at least 6 that were as well qualified as I was, and maybe more so. Problem the apps were too broad, and did not go after that one job. I made one for that job only, and and got the job. Only one even interviewed.

When I was hiring, I was not looking for a Jack Of All Trades as you sound like in your description. I interviewed people, that sold me on the fact that they were qualified for that job and they wanted it. Your resume has less than 30 seconds to sell the person on interviewing you. If it looks too broad, it never lasts over about 10 seconds.

If you are looking for jobs in an area such as St George where there is a shortage of jobs, every job gets lots of applications, you only get a few seconds to sell them on you. A resume, tailored to that particular job only, is what it takes to get a job.
