I am looking around for a place to rent somewhere in about a 40 - 50 mile radius of St. George, and have been thinking of Mesquite.

I am retired, I prefer warmth over cold, and I have a motorcycle as well as a car so I want somewhere with a garage. I'm finding places in St. George itself are a little higher in rent than I like. I also just got my tax bill for the year (income) so I'm thinking Nevada would save me some money that way too.

I haven't spent much time there so I'm hoping that some of you who have been in this area longer than me might be able to offer some info, tips, etc. on Mesquite. Areas to look, areas to avoid, crime, cost of living, all that stuff.

I would post this in the Nevada forums, but they seem to be very concentrated on Vegas and it's suburbs with very little mention of Mesquite so I figured I'd try here since it's closer to St. George anyway

I have only stayed in Mesquite as a visitor so can't say much about living there. I did know some people who lived there. They had complaints though they seemed to be personal related, nothing against the town. In fact I think I started looking for retirement there after talking to them, but I think I've decided I don't want hot summers.

It has a good climate as long as you have good air conditioning. If you will be working in St George the Gorge drive might get old real quick.

Areas to avoid? Anywhere near the casinos. It isn't that big of a town.

Low crime, decent rents. Condos don't usually have garages, but some might that I don't know about. Decent houses w/garage can be had for around $1200 +/-. About a 40 minute drive to St. G. You have to drive through a gorge, which isn't too bad, but one accident with you on the wrong side can slow you down a lot. North side of I15 is mostly the retired folk, snowbirds and newer construction. South are more year round residents and lower rents/sales prices.

We are looking to move to Mesquite, NV. What is the cost for air conditioning during the summer? I know it can get upwards to 100-110 for 5 months and the rest of the time it is really nice. I am tired of California and we are young retirees.

Heating/cooling is via heat pumps. Most people keep their inside summer temps at 80° in order to save on electric costs. We kept our 1430sf 5 star place at 76-78°, and the summer electric bill ran around $75. A friend of ours has a 1750sf place that he keeps summer temp settings at 67. His electric summertime bill usually stays under $260.

Water Useage for us ran $35 at lower end to $55. That included landscaping drip system for a drought resistant landscape.

Thank you Dave-ak. That is really reasonable on air condition during the summer(we keep our's at 78-79 but we have a older air condition system that runs about $150-200 in the hot months) so this would be a hugh savings to us and City/trash as well. Internet we are use to paying a bundle internet and cell phone/data for $135.00/month since I have a small business.

I was out there this past weekend looking at homes and the heat was at 102-104. I am use to dry heat in the desert with our motorsport events we organize. We have one coming up in November out in Mesquite and use of roads in St. George, Utah and Arizona.
