I had dinner at Cicero's on Saturday -- my Ragin' Cajun pizza was soooo good, and their beer selection is insane.
Amen to that. I felt like a kid in a candy store reading the choices in this place.

I used to live in Maryland Heights, near Westport (as Moorlander suggested) when I first moved to the St. Louis area as a single 22 year old female, so I was in the same boat as you

Maryland Heights was perfect- I never had an issue with safety / crime / feeling unsafe. Westport Plaza has the benefit of a St. Louis Bread Co and Starbucks if you don't feel like making your own breakfast- and Maryland Heights isn't too far down interstate I-270 from Hazelwood. Additionally, Maryland Heights is fairly self sufficient as far as amenities are concerned. There's Harrahs Casino, Creve Coeur Lake, a Schnucks, etc.

It doesn't give you the urban, gritty vibe that areas of the city would. And it's not exactly somewhere that you can go "barhopping", but, take it from someone who was in your exact situation (except that I worked downtown), you can't beat Maryland Heights for a mix of affordability, convenience and safety.

Good Luck!!!
