I am interested in exploring some of the suburbs of St. Louis. Which areas have the best downtowns (shopping, restaurants)to explore? I'm not looking for a mall experience. Ive already been to St Charles. Specific recommendations regarding restaurants and shopping areas would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Talk about the city, the suburbs just lead up to something even greater.

Downtown Clayton is the most urban and U-City is the most exciting, but Kirkwood, Maplewood, and Webster Groves all have that cute small-town downtown feel. Kirkwood even has a functioning train station. Maplewood has an awesome little shop called Vom Fass where they make all their own distilled liquors, vinegars, olive oils, etc (free samples!), and Schlafly Bottleworks is right up the street.

Kirkwood's downtown I think is pretty good for a suburb. On Thursday nights, they have live music playing outside of Bar Louie's, by the train station. There is a lot of activity around there right now, with the farmers market still going, the custard station, the train station, etc.

This is a great round up. Florissant and Ferguson also have small downtown areas as well, but with fewer amenities than those listed above.

Let's not forget our Illinois-side suburbs with decent downtowns: Belleville, Edwardsville, and Alton for example.
