The daughter of St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa and an untold number of police officers got free use of cars from a company with a lucrative police contract to tow and store cars, the department admitted on Friday.

STLtoday - City cops used previously impounded cars for 'test drives' (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/1A55CE3C1CC31DD68625748B001DFFFA?OpenDocument - broken link)

Can not begin to say on how many different levels I am upset after reading the various articles regarding this fiasco. The police chief should be tarred and feathered, and then hung in public display for all other's that might have similar kind of deal, as a public warning to these scoundrels. To have these kinds of sugar deals [buying and "leasing" at prices none of us regulars would be able to acquire], that is beyond despicable harm to public trust and integrity, especially of the person in the role of chief of organization that is there to instill public trust, to serve and to protect, to uphold and enforce the laws, laws that should apply to everyone...

PLUS his daughter all of these traffic offenses - I am sure if it would be regular Joe or Jane Public, we'd be off with the same slap on the wrist as her?

Apologies for the uncharacteristically madman post here... just need to vent regarding this matter.

Trying to be somewhat fair about the chief [http://www.slmpd.org/mokwa/index.htm] (broken link), as I believe he has done positives for the city, as it has struggled with its crime, during his tenure. Be a shame that he let such as this mess occur, while overall he could be best man in the position...

That is so unacceptable. How could there be no laws broken?

For those interested in this scandalizing mess, might desire to read the following articles, hitting the "related links" in there too.
And you'd think that StL was trying be be like the city of big shoulders or somethin'...

The Platform » Blog Archive » Sunday editorial: The chief departs (http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/the-platform/published-editorials/2008/07/sunday-editorial-the-chief-departs/ - broken link)
STLtoday - Mokwa controversy emphasizes police independence from City Hall (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/7CB92363673A3C3C86257493000E6AA6?OpenDocument - broken link)
STLtoday - Towing firm has old ties with city (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/02CE6A146786E1E5862574920018A029?OpenDocument - broken link)

There were many laws, both those of civil and of moral type, that strongly appear to have been broken and/or compromised. 'Tis a shame that what appears to have been a good chief in so many aspects has fallen due to this rubble. Many many aspects of this entire mess are totally rank... accountability needs to be upheld here.
