Default my two cents..

I opened the link expecting to see a much bigger/better house for 500k..it always blows my mind how expensive the nice parts of St. Louis are in comparrison to other midwester cities like Indy, Columbus, etc. You could live in the NICEST burb in Columbus and get way more for your house..why did they choose that house? I think they could have better represented St .Louis by showing a newer/nicer home for 500k.

Eh, true, but compared to a lot of cities St. Louis is pretty cheap.

And obviously the places deemed safer or nicer will cost more.

Here's a nice house for $400k http://www.cbgundaker.com/search/adv...51832&type=res

Yikes for that money now you could live in Boston, but then there are the taxes.

The article's slant is how $1 million dollar homes are going now for 1/2. To quote, "And, for the most part, these are very nice homes—as they should be—maybe not as fancy or tricked-out as the McMansions of yore, but these days we are all setting our expectations a little lower." Only a few looked like they were built in the last 20 years. I think they're trying to illustrate how expectations are shifting away from the new home on a suburban cul-de-sac.

No offense to Columbus, but why are you comparing St. Louis to Columbus, not exactly apples to apples?

I do agree with with your basic premise that St. Louis has some areas that are vastly overpriced, but it's supply and demand and many people find those areas desirable.

Well, I compare the two because I have lived in Chicago, Columbus and my entire family lives in St. Louis. I would very much like to move to St. Louis to be near family and am always keeping up on the job/housing market. Like I said, I am consistently amazed at how expensive it is to live there versus other mid western cities. I should clarify, to live in a nice area with good schools. I find it discouraging because I, quite frankly, don't think St. Louis has as much to offer as some of the other Midwestern cities (job market is especially poor for white collar professionals) and think it should be reflected in the cost of living (for a nice area). The job market is primarily blue collar (you don't need to send me a list of the Fortune 500 companies there, trust me, I am aware of them). Simply, in comparrison to other midwestern cities, the professional job market is not as strong across many industries including: Retail, Financial Services, Consumer Goods, etc). If you are in the healthcare field, St. Louis is a great place to make a career, but I feel it lacks in the other areas.

There are Chicago suburbs that offer great schools where 500k would go a lot further than the house they chose to show. I bet, per the post above, there are also parts of Boston.

Just my two cents.

But that house is int he city, not the suburbs. That's comparing apples to oranges. Where in the city can you live in a good neighborhood in a house that size for 500k??? Plus, the taxes? Fuhgeddaboutdit ... 10k easily. That's the major reason I would never buy property in Chicago.
