I just don't think Illinois would be cheap enough to make that commute from Chesterfield make any sense. There are cheap areas on the west side of the St. Louis metro that would work on a low budget just fine.

Good point about the hospital -- it's incredibly well respected.

Manchester, Ballwin, Chesterfield, Wildwood, Eureka, Fenton, Kirkwood--all have good schools--and would be great places to raise your kids. I've lived here all my life and would definitely suggest finding something close to your work and with good highway access. Don't know much about St. Charles County, but I personally wouldn't be interested unless I worked out there. Bridge traffic can be dicey.

Traffic on the 70 or 40 bridge is usually fine during rush hour. It's really only on 70 just west of St. Peters (right around the 79 exit) that traffic is really bad.

270's traffic is far worse.

A young single mother of 2, and people suggest commuting to Chesterfield from Illinois? C'mon. I would suggest a place like Maplewood, you can still rent relatively cheap, the schools are ok, and you have a very central location to the city, west county, north county, south county, etc. You are pretty much in the center of it all in Maplewood.

I'm not a fan of the suburbs (joanie...Chesterfield isn't St. Louis :P) outside the inner-ring, so I have a hard time suggesting them. But if you can't afford private school for your children, I couldn't tell you to move to the city.
