My personal take is that it is underpowered for what you get. Do you want a small SUV? If so, I'd look at the Forrester, or Mazda's CX-5.
Mazda's new vehicles with the Skyactiv engines are the new benchmark imo.
Agree with this. Now that the Forrester has the 170 hp engine, same high clearance, way bigger interior and cargo capacity and gets the same mileage the Crosstrek seems a little underwhelming. Granted the Forrester is more expensive but you get way more for your money. That the Forrester also is available with the pretty amazing X-Mode AWD it is more capable in slippery conditions and off road as well.
If you don't need all that AWD/light off road capability then the CX-5 is a great and more enjoyable driving vehicle than either.
Many thanks to you all, 2 years ago, I bought a car, that is excellent on gas, 35.5 mpg around town, 44 on high way....that is the only thing I love about it. cannot tell you how many times its been in the shop, so hopefully if all goes well, I'm going to unload it, cannot say what it is....however, I'm never buying an American made car again. So, it is between a Subaru or Prius....I like that fact that Prius makes a larger car, however, I've heard that the Prius is a cheaply made car with a very good engine in it...the Subaru is quality, very well made....but I never, ever want to go thru the nightmare I've been dealing with the car I already have.
Love the fact that Prius gets excellent milage...like the Forester...as well, and love the Crosstrek, however, Subaru cars do not get the gas milage?
People tell me, if I purchase a Prius, I've got to drive alot to get a return....in my opinion, you never get a return on a car, the moment you drive it off the lot, it depreciates. And, a concern is, that you all know as well as I do, gas will go up.
I just don't want to buy another new car and have it in the shop all the time.

There is truth to the advice not to buy a car the first year it comes out. If you decide on the Crosstrek I would suggest waiting to make sure they get the bugs out, if any. Subaru is known for quality but they too have had some major recalls
in the past. We considered it but found it too small, the Forester has also been re-done for 2014, so we decided on the Escape which is in it's 2nd year.

But, If I were in your position and looking for a small, fun car that gets good mpg, has good reliability, and is fun to actually drive, I'd be looking at the 2014 Mazda 3. 30/40mpg, and while I haven't driven the new model, Mazdas are always fun.
