Nobody ever responded to the suggestion of the Sedgewick neighborhood in Syracuse proper. The houses in that historic area look amazing, and some are right in our price range. Also, they appear to be walkable to both 1) schiller park, with an amazing pool and slide and 2) a small commercial area on the corner of Park & Oak, including Rileys, which I can only find good things written about it online, along with a number of pizza shops and a corner market. Can anyone chime in on what seems to be a perfect fit and just what we're looking for?
Actually, some of the homes I posted are in Sedgwick and portions are more walkable to Schiller Park, Salem-Hyde Elementary and businesses on Grant Boulevard and in Shop City Plaza/on Teall Avenue as well. So, it can work.
Shop City has an Asian restaurant, a pharmacy, a Tops Supermarket, an Auto Parts store, a Fish take out, an Italian restaurant, about 2 or 3 banks, a pizzeria and a McDonald's. You have Steak and Sundae restaurant on Teall just north of Shop City. Further north into Lyncourt is CJ's Fish take out, Lyncourt Bakery, Domino's Pizza and Kountry Kitchen restaurant all on Teall. On Grant Boulevard between Butternut and Wadsworth, you have a couple of Italian restaurants(one take out, the other sit down or take out), a sports bar/restaurant(good wings), a pharmacy, an old school German deli, a dry cleaner business, a couple of chain convenient stores and a couple of other businesses: Court-Woodlawn Task Force: Click Walkable Court Woodlawn - Butternut Circle https://maps.gstatic.com/m/streetvie...224923378,,0,0
It is just outside of city limits, but it has the same infrastructure, you are still close to the shopping/businesses mentioned and it is in the Lyncourt SD(K-8, go to Solvay for HS, but some send their kids to Bishop Grimes for HS).

My husband would be very nervous about me taking a walk, with or without our children, through those neighborhoods. I'd also be nervous about break-ins.
A sleeper, as it can allow you to walk to restaurants and stores in Westvale Plaza, Morgan's restaurant and you can take Salisbury Road to Burnet Park just inside of city limits for its pool and the zoo. It is also in the Westhill SD: Geddes Real Estate - 268 E Manchester Rd, Geddes, NY, 13219

Thanks. We'll have to check out the neighborhood. We lived in Brooklyn and some gritty parts of Manhattan in the past, and are not concerned about a location that is absolutely crime free.
I always find houses I love in Geddes and they look like great deals, but make sure you check out their taxes.
I think the reason for that is because of the smaller school districts(Solvay and Westhill) and the trade off for having Solvay Electric in the Solvay SD portion of the town. There may be slightly lower taxes for homes in the West Genesee SD in the town, but I'm not sure about that.
Also, there's a town of Geddes PD, a Solvay PD and then there's the Onondaga County Sheriff's Dept. that cover the town. So, it could be a matter of some duplicate services.
I went by the Sedgwick homes on Brattle Rd, Scoville and Mertens. I think you would be fine in any of them and you can walk down Rugby Rd to get to the Schiller Park pool. For restaurants, Teall and Shop City would be closer and those on James in Eastwood and on Grant Boulevard wouldn't be too far away.
I also went by the home on Chestnut in North Syracuse. It seems to be alright, but that was just from the outside. It is a straight walk down Chestnut/Circleville/Church to the library and going further and a left down Grove to the Kennedy Park pool. There are restaurants, ice cream shops and other stores up and down Brewerton Road through the village. There is a park going the other way down Chestnut too. For groceries, you may be able to take a good walk to Maines for some items towards the southern end of the village. Besides that, there are grocery stores outside of the village on Brewerton Road and on Taft Road.
I also went down Cambridge and while I didn't spot the home posted, it looks like a well kept street in terms of homes. It is very close to the Westcott Business District and the library. It isn't too far from the Thornden Park pool, which is about 5 blocks away or so. There are quite a few restaurants on Westcott, along with a couple of cages, a liquor store, a boutique, a consignment store and a couple of convenient stores, among a few other things.
