Anybody familiar with the taxicabs situation in Syracuse? It seems everything is metered; I was given an approx cost of 15.00 to go from my area to the Carousel mall, total distance maybe 2.5 miles!!
I don't drive and this could be a real hassle, getting around. The bus is close to me and runs often but if I"m in a hurry, I would like to use car service/taxis.
Can anyone recommend a car service or taxi that uses flat rates that are reasonable; anyone from area familiar with this topic, please post
Thank You.
Thanks, have already seen that web site("call carmen") he never answers the phone on either number. He posts the same rates except the 10% discount.
I mean really a distance of 2.5 miles: a quote of $15.00; don't you think that is Extremely Excessive?
Anybody else who knows of a car service that offers flat rates or ones more reasonable then the ones posted in my posting or within the link on the previous post, please let me know.
In an area where the median income is around $30,000.00, I don't understand how people living here can afford these rates or why they have not approached city hall or the local politicians about this ripoff.

Realistically, most people in this area drive where they need to go or use the bus system if they don't/can't drive. Taxis aren't used as a regular mode of transportation; consequently they become expensive to use. I believe they are all metered around here, with a base rate.
It's much more cost-effective to either use public transit or share a taxi with others to mitigate the cost.
Taxi rates are all the same in Syracuse and should ALWAYS run on the meter, unless you are going to the airport or out of town. The taxi starts at 2.80 and it is $3.20 per mile. If you need a reliable name, I use Syracuse Cab at (315)751-4444. It's a family owned and run business and they keep thief word. They have never been late, only early. Just an FYI
If by chance you are a student, faculty or staff at SU - you can join Zipcar for $35 per year. Taxis in Syracuse HAVE to be expensive because they simply can't do they kind of daily volume that cabs in NY or other large cities can - plus they usually end up having to drive places to pick up a fare and then head to their next fare with an empty cab. Apart from limited action late at night downtown and on the SU hill... there's no such thing as just cruising in your cab and regularly getting flagged down by paying customers. This is a very tough town in which to scratch out a living as a cabbie and I do not envy them.
That rate is normal. You have to consider that they need to make a profit. They also have to drive whatever distance to pick you up and then take you where you want to go and then head back to where ever they want to go. When you consider all of that travel they aren't making much at all from your $15 trip.
Sure it seems high when you only want to go 2.5 miles but to many cab drivers a trip like that isn't even worth their time unless they're already in the area. You know?
I'd recommend a bike or maybe moped if you do very little travel. It's very inexpensive and convenient when you need it.
