I live in Tampa now and have for about 23 yrs, I'm in the process of moving to Charlotte, NC with my family. As for Tampa, it is urban as others are stating and great food. If I were ever to move back here, I would live in south tampa, north tampa (Land O Lakes) or NE St.Pete. Seasons don't really exist here. The longer your here the more you feel like you can see changes but not really. Crime is everywhere but FL for some reason is the state that fugitives like to pick. School systems are poor so we have always had our kids in private and charter. I would say that it's very diverse here but that comes with a feeling of difference rather than community. We are a huge waterway so imports of people and goods are here. I'm looking forward to NC

The Raleigh area is very nice, but more sprawling than even here. Things are very spread out, so you need to drive further to things in many cases. It is hillier than here, much colder in the winter time, and can be hotter, more stagnant and just as humid in the summertime. Landlocked.

It would be a nice change of pace, for those looking for something different.

If you are of the "Salt Life" persuasion, then Florida would be the winning bet! I've been to Raleigh. There is no way I'd choose it over this area. Florida has a very different culture … some say it has NO culture, but I really think it does. It's very laid-back here. Most people want to take the time to enjoy life and relax. Sand between the toes, sunshine on the shoulders, enjoying the beautiful Gulf waters … I love it all! In fact, I am unhappy today because it's been raining pretty much non-stop and I've been stuck inside. Other than a quick visit to one of my friends', I've been lazing around on my laptop all day.

The Salt Life thing isn't for everyone. I know of many ultra-professional types who hate it here. They can't understand why people are late, why folks feel it's OK to show up in church and nice restaurants in shorts or flip flops, why Florida's salaries stink, etc. I know I could make A LOT more money elsewhere, and I've lived in other places, but Tampa Bay is my absolute favorite.

I own homes in both places. I like both places. Cary, (Raleigh) because its got seasons and hills and access to mountains and different scenery. Here, beaches, diversity, culture (downtown st pete is marvelous), warm winter which I defo prefer to warm summer! Our traffic is not bad, though many say it is, but then they have not lived in Miami
Don't think either are cheap living options any longer, we paid $260K for a nice new townhouse in Cary, it would cost a little more here for the standard of construction but running costs are lower and insurances are definitely lower. No state income tax in Florida either.
