Can anyone tell the process? Where and how? What is required to legally own a hand gun in St. Pete? I know a carry permit is different requirements. Thanks much for sharing your knowledge.

Don't think anything is required to own a handgun. There is a wait period to buy one and a few rules along the lines of who cannot participate:

any convicted felon to have in his or her possession any firearm or to carry a concealed weapon unless his civil rights have been restored.

The following persons to own, possess or use any firearm - drug addicts, alcoholics, mental incompetents, and vagrants.

Handguns are sold with a 3 day waiting period unless you have a concealed weapons permit in FL. However, you can purchase one in a private sale and then there is no waiting period. By private sale, I mean from someone who is not a licensed firearms dealer.

Florida wasn't very populated in the "wild west days".
I don't think wally world sells handguns anymore, just rifles and shot guns and ammo. There is no waiting period for a rifle or shotgun.
Yes, you can buy a gun in FL and a whole lot of other states too. Its a right guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.

In the "wild west days" you could shoot/kill someone because they cheated you at a poker game and basically get away with it because there was little to no law in the western territories.

In FL there are only certain circumstances where you can legally use deadly force.

Very very rarely do you find a legal firearms holder using his firearm in an illegal manner.

People with concealed carry permits very rarely shoot anybody. I'll be getting mine soon. It's dangerous out there. You can count on the police to come mop you up after you're dead, but it's easy to imagine a situation where you have to protect yourself. For example, the couple in Tierra Verde that shot and killed the home invader. That's why you have a gun.

Please stay on topic. This is not the forum to debate whether or not gun ownership should be legal. The OP did not ask for your opinion as to whether he should by one only about permits.

The only permit required to own a hand gun in Florida is if you carried concealed.

You can buy a gun from an individual and don't even have to register it.

no permit is required to own a handgun in whole state of FL

You would need a conceal weapons permit if you want to carry. Remember, even with permit, the weapon would still need to be concealed.
That may change soon to where you could openly carry w/ permit:

Default to have a hand gun in florida, the rules.

you have the right to own a hand gun in florida.
you have the right to buy one after you fill out the application and wait 3 days unless it is a private sale.
your gun may used to protect you and your property, livestock, family from imminent and grave danger.

you may also now have your gun in your vehicle without a carry permit.
but law says it must be secured in state of florida.

such as you can have it in a zipper gun bag on your seat,
such as keep it in lock box.
or keep a lock on it,
or keep it holstered in the glove compartment.

all of the above are considered secure in the state of florida. even a tupperware container is considered secure. ( this came from my husbands mouth and he is a retired deputy)

if you are stopped by the police and have to reach for registration and insurance, inform the officer you have a gun in the glove compartment, they may retrieve it out for you, or have you retrieve it out in their presence. DO NOT GO FOR YOUR REGISTRATION AND INSURANCE WITHOUT TELLING OFFICER YOUR HANDGUN IS IN COMPARTMENT. it may lead to a terrible misunderstanding.

my husband is a retired deputy and he has told me to recommend this to you.
