I think you know the drill.

How about University of Tampa Bay?

Let's get this done. You are not in the South Florida metro area so many people don't even realize that USF is in Tampa. You're always playing 2nd fiddle to Miami. I think it's key for people to associate the university with the Tampa Bay area. USF has a growing sports program and is really starting to get some recognition. It's now or never.

Makes no sense to change the name...it is known for many, many years as USF. It would take a lot to change that name, and I don't really see a reason to do that.

Plus, if you want that to happen, you will have to petition the board at USF, not ppl on City-Data that don't work there, nor have any power to change that.

Algia is right. Besides, it was established in 1958 and I have never heard anyone complain about the name. No reason at all to change it.

The only people who DON'T complain about the name are people in Tampa Bay who are used to it.

The rest of the state, country and the world wonder why there is a college named U of South Florida that is ACTUALLY NOT LOCATED IN SOUTH FLORIDA. It's really embarrassing.

Really -the WHOLE WORLD - and you know this how? Guess they are lucky if that is all they have to complain about

Small thinking gets us nowhere.

Yes, my visitors from Paris, South Africa, etc., have asked me why USF is named USF when we are not in SF.

When the Bulls were in the tourney, I was getting Facebook messages constantly from around the world asking me about this also.

Last week I was in Clearwater Beach and I heard an English couple looking at Bulls shirts ask a cashier why USF is not in South Florida.

It is a poor choice of name given its location, but what would you suggest? The two most obvious choices are taken (U of Tampa, U of Central FL). You could do something weird like Tampa State U but that is pretty terrible. Incorporating "Tampa Bay" into the name would be great but Tampa Bay U isn't enough of a distinction from U of Tampa and would confuse the entire planet.

Oh wait, I just remembered I'm not from here and I don't care. Go Hokies!!

They should totally change the school's moniker to appease foreign tourists.

Good point re: tourists. I am sure that if the local media did a poll on changing the name, most people in Tampa Bay would want to keep it the way it is: completely inaccurate and totally embarrassing.
