#1 Coronado Beach, on a peninsula across the bay from San Diego, has near-perfect Mediterranean weather and a postcard backdrop. The No. 1 beach in the United States in the 2012 survey by "Dr. Beach" professor Stephen P. Leatherman of Florida International University

"I think it's one of the most super beaches around," said Leatherman, director of FIU's Laboratory for Coastal Research.

Rounding out the top 10 this year were

No. 2, Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii;
No. 3, Main Beach, East Hampton, N.Y.;
No. 4, St. George Island State Park, Florida Panhandle;
No. 5, Hamoa Beach, Maui, Hawaii;
No. 6, Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Mass.;
No. 7, Waimanalo Bay Beach Park, Oahu, Hawaii;
No. 8, Cape Florida State Park near Miami.;
No. 9, Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, S.C.;
No. 10, Cape Hatteras in North Carolina.

I'm curious how any position could change once you've made the top 10??? I guess it boils down to the people and the maintenance. I guess we shouldn't complain. The less crowded the beaches here, the more enjoyable they are!!! lol (I know, the local economy will take a hit, but I couldn't help but be greedy!)

The reason is once a beach is #1, it is no longer considered......

I guess that is the only way people keep quoting this guy as one day they will get their beach at #1

Lived in Hawaii as a kid and now FLA.....and although I like Bradenton Beaches, there's no way that most if not all of Hawaii beaches don't outrank the FLA beaches. Except for the ones that get overpopulated with tourists in Hawaii or possibly parking might be tough to find in certain areas of Hawaii (like Waikiki) - there's not much comparison.

It doesn't bother me that my local fav beaches aren't on the list - bad for tourism, but good for keeping the crowds down.

I've never been to Hawaii, but i've been to most all the beaches in the continental U.S. and I think Destin, Florida has the prettiest beaches i've ever been to.

Exactly, Florida had dominated the list for quite some time and we only have so many quality beaches.

Pshaw!

I saw California beaches in the 60's.

Words floating on the water, rocks melting, colors too bright.

gmanbat - you crack me up!

And yes, after the beach hits #1 it can't be considered any longer. And I agree that no publicity is a plus!

Agreed...and I've been to Hawaii. The snow white soft sands and swimming pool clear water beaches of Destin is the best. Hawaii only has it beat with the tropical fish when you snorkel right off the beach but I'd take Destin over any beach I've ever been to any day.
