Hi I am thinking of moving to Tampa at the end of the summer. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get a job here working in a bar or as a waitress?

Good luck to you, I can't answer your question but what I do know is that the rents are high and going ridiculously higher and employers down here like to pay minimum wage. I don't know where you're coming from but I will tell you this, just as soon as i can get ahead, i'm out of this state. It's tough down here and I've had a decent job that I've been at for the last 8 years.....IMO.

Why is that?! How does this state (or maybe it is just Tampa?) survive with high COL and low pay? It feels so...backwards...I know CA has a very high COL, but often the pay for positions at least reflects the higher cost (maybe not enough, but some!).

Lots of low-rent apartment areas. Lots of slums.

This. But Tampa doesn't really have a high COL either.

I've been renting a house and before that a duplex and what I find is not so much "low rent" areas but more like "low rent slumlords" they sure do like that rent on time but dont ever want to keep up their end of the deal. Its crazy. Im sure its probably a little different if you're renting an apartment as the laws are a little tougher on them than single family dwellings.

This is so true. Though, all of the slumlords I dealt with were in the Brandon/Seffner area. I found a really good landlord in Tampa.

Tampa is more of a "make it or fake it" type of city...you have your haves and have nots, the middle class is sort of dwindling away (of course that is the case for most of the country)....like @craigtnelson said, lots of low rent apartments where you can hear everything your neighbor does, from washing dishes to you know...lol

Im pretty sure you will be able to find a waitress job fairly easy, with your range depending on where you live you can find a half way decent 1 bedroom loft in s. tampa (the low income part) in the $850 or less range...GL!

So it will be manageable but will suck total till you actually get on your feet.

Agreed. Atlanta ( and the surrounding metro area) doesn't either and Tampa has a slightly lower COL than Atl.

Tx is reasonable too. Now you go up to NY state, Boston or out west to Ca , especially Northern CA, or the Seattle area you're paying out the A$$. But in fairness the typical salaries are going to be COL adjusted.
