I see all these great things happening in St. Pete, and I thought it would be perfect place for me to relocate to. And then I see an "F" rating on crime in Area Vibes, and the crime stats seem abnormally higher than both the national average and the rest of Florida.

My question - Is St. Pete's safe? I find it hard to believe it can be so bad?

Any thoughts?

Like any other city in America, there are good parts and bad parts.

It ultiimately depends on how much money you have to spend for housing.

Tell everyone how much you can afford and they'll point you to the best area in your budget.

I lived in St Pete for 14 years. The crime is much higher than the national average. That is a fact. I was single, it was a place that had culture, art, coffee shops, parades, bookstores, farmer markets and so many other things. I had a house alarm that I used. And I eventually adopted a big dog just because I love animals.

That being said in the 14 years....two neighbors got robbed, one at gunpoint in front of their kids, I had multiple renters around me riddled with domestic abuse where I called 911 quite a bit, someone stole a car and crashed it into my yard in a police chase at 3 AM and two men another day two men hid in my yard from someone (police) breifly until they say my dog in attack mode and left VERY quick.

So I disagree with the poster who says "any town has crime"....some more than others. On the flip side it is one of the only areas that embraces diversity and is a melting pot of culture for race, orientation, religion and more. And as stated there are many things to do. It is heaven for art lovers as well.

Since having children I left 5 months ago. I wanted better schools and less crime. I live in Brandon now and got that but I still miss St Pete for all the other things it has to offer.

You can get a crime map at crimedata.com and it will show you what areas of the city to avoid. Unfortunately the closer you are to downtown there is more to do but more crime.

Wow - Thanks CAM72 for the info. I tend to live safety and security above the restaurants and coffeeshops.

Are there any cool SAFE suburbs that have some restaurants/shopping or beach towns that you could recommend?

St. Pete does have an above average crime rate and it's much higher than Tampa's. But like anywhere, I'm pretty sure there are still decent neighborhoods in St. Pete. Maybe CAM72's area in St. Pete wasn't that great in terms of crime.

Either way, I'd still take St. Petersburg over Tampa, Largo, Brandon, etc. any day. Just my 2 cents.

You can live on the beach or in any number of exclusive areas. You are worrying over nothing.
